U.S. Supreme Court Denies Certiorari in Greenberg v. Paul Revere Life Ins., Co.
On June 28, 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court denied UnumProvident and Paul Revere's petition for certiorari, in Greenberg v. Paul Revere Life Ins., Co. This denial let stand the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit opinion affirming the jury's verdict of $547,445.42 compensatory damages and $2.4 million in punitive damages in a case involving the bad faith denial of disability insurance benefits. Cancer lawsuit settled for $20 Million - Bergonzi v. Central States Health and Life Co. of Omaha,
U.S. District Court, Sioux Falls, SD, 11/18/03 - Central States, a Nebraska insurance company, has agreed to pay $20 million to settle claims that it sold cancer insurance to people nationwide but paid only a fraction of the benefits when they got sick. U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier approved the class action settlement on November 18, 2003.

Of the $20 million, $7.5 million is to be paid to about 1,240 people who were denied coverage. Of the rest, $2.5 million will pay attorneys' fees and the remainder will be put into a fund to pay for any future medical expenses incurred by the 1,400 people who filed claims or any of more than 18,000 other people nationwide who bought the policies but have not contracted cancer. Rick Friedman wins $85 Million jury verdict in: Ceimo v. Paul Revere, Provident Accident and Life and General American Life,
U.S. District Court, Phoenix, Arizona, 4/2/03 - Jury finds that disability insurer terminated benefits of cardiologist in bad faith. Jury awards $5.4 million for emotional distress and $79 million punitive damages. See - News Release. This award was the 7th largest jury verdict in the United States in 2003.
"Paper Chase Part I" -
aired on NBC's Dateline June 23, 2000. In 15-month investigation, they interviewed more than 250 people, reviewed more than 70,000 pages of documents, and examined two companies that State Farm did business with involving "independent medical reviews." They state, "What we found was a disturbing pattern in the way State Farm handled thousands of accident claims." The story featured interviews with our clients, Cindy Robinson and Lucreca Duffey. "Paper Chase Part II" -
was broadcast on July 25, 2000. Dateline added to the original report in significant ways. It stated that additional insurance companies were using the same illegal and unethical tactics previously highlighted. The show presented additional examples of fraud and featured an interview with our clients, Cindy Robinson and Lecreca Duffey
